Structuring an Essay

Structuring your essay correctly will make it easier for a reader to read and understand. Generally an essay has three main parts; the introduction, the main body and a conclusion. In the main body of your essay you will need to break down your points into separate paragraphs.

There are several techniques which may help with structuring your essay. One such technique is the PEE essay writing technique. The P stands for point. This means that what you write, whether it is a short sentence or a few lines, should make a point that the reader will understand and is relevant to your subject. E stands for evidence. This means that you must provide evidence in your essay for your points or conclusions. This may be a quote or a reference to a scientific paper or a chapter in a book. The second E stands for explanation. This means that you must give an explanation of what the quote or the reference illustrates in the case of your argument. Sometimes people add an R to the end of PEE. R stands for review. This means that it is a good idea to review what you have written. This allows you to correct any spelling or grammar mistakes.

It is recommended that you start your essay by writing down the title and then a list of all your main points. These points will become the paragraphs in your final essay. Many people recommend writing a draft of your essay if you have the time and then going back over the essay until you are happy with the end result.
